What is Personal Injury Protection (PIP)? PIP is coverage you purchase through your own insurance policy. It is not available in all states, is mandatory in some states, and is optional in others. It is optional in Maryland but is automatic on every motor vehicle insurance policy unless you affirmatively waive it. PIP will cover you for medical bills and lost wages in the event you are in an accident REGARDLESS of fault. This is extremely helpful if you don’t have health insurance or are not paid if you don’t work. Many insurers will try and convince you to waive it because it is a cost saver for the company. PIP should never be waived.

In Maryland, your insurance company must offer a minimum of $2500 of PIP coverage. They may offer more, and if so, you should get whatever minimum you can afford. The monthly cost of PIP is relatively low. Your insurance company may also offer Medpay which is similar but does not cover lost wages. Medpay tends to have a lower premium as it does not cover wage loss. PIP and Medpay are great safety nets in the event you are in an accident. You won’t have to worry about your bills or lost wages while you are dealing with your pain and injuries. Check with your insurance company today to see that you are covered. If you hire me to handle your personal injury case, and you have PIP, I will handle the PIP claim for you. You should also check with your homeowner or renter’s insurance policy to see if it includes Medpay as this is often available as well.
